Danish design has established a name for itself through the iconic works of architects and designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Poul Henningsen, Verner Panton and Børge Mogensen. Their creations have contributed substantially to the understanding of what design can mean in a contemporary open society. Already by 1982, they had made such a big name for themselves that the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York staged a large exhibition on Scandinavian design sensibility, in which the ‘major natural resources’ of Denmark were identified as ‘skill, imagination, and a sense of quality’.
These iconic designers are as valid today as they were in the 1980s. And the flow of new talent has once again placed Denmark at the forefront of today’s global creative industries. The 360° on Danish Design event in Amsterdam-IJburg will provide you with the opportunity to meet some of the new and established Danish talents.
The event is initiated by the Royal Danish Embassy to the Netherlands and is a meeting of minds and cultures in both architecture and design between two Northern European countries that share many similarities, while fostering their unique differences.
The 360° on Danish Design event will consist of an opening night on Thursday 5 March and an exhibition called NordicLiving with ‘hygge’ as the theme, which is free and open to the public from Friday 6 March until Sunday 8 March.
The opening night will feature lectures by Bjarne Hammer, partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects, Danish architect and industrial designer Knud Holscher and Dutch architect Sjoerd Soeters, who will present their thoughts on the qualities and prospects of design in Denmark and its relevance in today’s global marketplace.
The NordicLiving exhibition, during the weekend will feature some of the cutting-edge new talents and established names within Danish design, showcasing the best in contemporary Danish design. The design and furniture companies you will be able to meet are: &tradition, addinterior, JACOB JENSEN, Carl Hansen & Søn, d line, ege, Erik Jørgensen, kvadrat, LoCa, louis poulsen, MAGNUS OLESEN, MUUTO, Normann Copenhagen, NORRMADE, Onecollection, RANDERS+RADIUS, Republic of Fritz Hansen, KAY BOJESEN DENMARK, vipp and vola.
