Working as a designer does not always come from being educated as a designer. Mere necessity or a brilliant idea combined with the needs of the users can be the fundament of a new design company.
DANISH™ dove into the background of four successful Danish design brands.
Jeppe Christensen former partner in a carpentry and design business and Michael Andersen former employee at Bjarke Ingels architecture. Together they noticed a growing interest around custom made carpentry kitchens, while also recognizing that the price range is too high.
They decided to solve this problem by creating Reform. They design unique kitchen fronts and table tops made from durable materials easy to combine with IKEA basic and popular models.
Roon & Rahn
Roon & Rahn has existed since April 2014. When the two graphic designer friends Nick Van and Rene Hansen moved in an apartment together they started designing and building furniture for their new home. A lot of their solutions are a product of the challenges they face in their everyday life. All of the products from Roon & Rahn are designed and manufactured in Denmark.
At the age of 17, Holger Nielsen won a car. As he did not have a driver’s licence, he sold the car and invested the money in a business that would enable him to work with his passion: steel. He trained as a metal turner, then, in 1939, his wife Marie asked him to design a pedal bin for her newly opened hairdressing salon.
It wasn’t just his wife who was enthusiastic about the practical pedal bin, though; her customers were equally impressed. So Holger decided to produce the bin on a larger scale. Today, VIPP is not just a story about bins; it’s the story of a range of products for bathrooms and kitchens and even a fancy shelter hotel.
The company was founded in 2010 by Maria-Luisa Rosendal and Martin Bay and is located in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Their first product was born from Marie´s school project at Edinburgh Napier University. The Wall Desk it was called and is a minimalist, multifunctional design that works both as a standing desk and a laptop stand.
The designduo´s main concern with the modern workspace is that computers are still not designed with ergonomics in mind. Today people want to create and work from at multitude of spaces and this is why Nordic Appeal have designed beautiful, functional accessories to make working anywhere pleasurable, comfortable and possible.
