THORS-DESIGN have received the highly regarded FSC certificate.
“This is a great advantage for us, when we are entering new markets,” says CEO at THORS-DESIGN Carsten Thor.
The fundamental idea behind THORS-DESIGN furniture is upcycling. Rustic Azobé wood from decommissioned Danish harbours, is turned into simple and stylish bespoke furniture.
Over the last 15 years, the company has reclaimed and upcycled wood from five Danish harbours. The company is therefore proud to have been awarded the FSC certificate, as it is both highly regarded and an absolute advantage for both the company and its customers.
“FSC is the only internationally recognized wood certification system and regarded by many as the gold standard. This is a real advantage for us, when we are entering new markets as we are at present, in the United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates,” explains Carsten Thor.
An advantage for our customers
A large majority of THORS-DESIGN’s customers are large companies, organisations and local authorities, who are focusing on upcycling and sustainability. Even though you can see that the materials used are recycled, there is often a requirement for documentation. This is possible now, with the FSC certification confirming that all wood used by THORS-DESIGN is 100% recycled.
“Many of our customers rightly believe that upcycling and environmental consciousness are key elements in any buying decision today. A FSC certification backs up our entire philosophy and is a confirmation that we do, what we say we do. It enables our customers to use our products in their sustainable projects and have full documentation to support their choice,” says Carsten Thor.
Signe Wenneberg built the first FSC certified wooden house back in 2014. Her house is built from 14 different types of wood, and 98% of the wood is FSC certified. The build was a demanding process, during which she discovered the importance of certification.
“The FSC certifications were my assurance that the materials that I was using were sustainable and had a positive story about transport, forestry and replanting. I wanted to show how it was possible to build a house from documented sustainable materials and for this reason, the FSC certification played a very important part,” said Signe Wenneberg.
Verified by COWI
The reason that the upcycling philosophy works for THORS-DESIGN, is that the wood in question is the extremely robust Azobé wood. Despite the fact that the wood has been partially submerged in the Danish sea for over half a century, it is so rich in natural oils that it has not yet dried out, nor does it require any specific treatment before being transformed in to bespoke furniture.
COWI have tested the wood and it has been verified to contain only natural oil and no form of chemicals that is the case in similar wood from railway sleepers. Because of these exceptional qualities, the furniture that THORS-DESIGN make has an estimated life cycle of between 50 and 100 years. The furniture is built to last, and is a resource that can continue to be recycled.
“This is upcycling in its simplest and purest form,” explains Carsten Thor and continues with his conclusion:
“We are extremely proud to play our part in setting the standards for sustainable furniture manufacturers. With this new certification, we hope that it will be even easier for us to get our message across in new markets, with documentation to back up our concept.”
