Turn up the Volume

The Danish/Italian design duo GamFratesi has designed a new lamp for Lightyears. It is inspired by the volume button on 1980s stereo amplifiers. We got hold of their drawings so you can get a glimpse into their design process.

You can adjust the intensity of the light by turning the palm-sized lampshade, just like you used to adjust the volume on your stereo. With Volume you get the best of both worlds: an old classic item reinterpreted as a modern design piece with LED lighting.

Everyday objects like the stereo amplifier’s volume button often inspire Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi. The Beetle Chair, for Gubi, is another good example, as the name indicates they drew inspiration from beetle bugs. They reinterpreted the hard shell and structure as a chair with a hard exterior and a soft interior, just like a beetle.
